The message teaches that God is not only powerful on the mountaintops but is equally sovereign in the valleys, using 1 Kings 20 to show that He proved Himself as Lord even when enemies believed otherwise. Through the contrast between Elijah’s post-victory despair and David’s ability to draw strength from past encounters with God, the sermon warns against wasting mountaintop experiences and forgetting God in difficult seasons. It emphasizes that valleys are places where God’s sustaining grace, endurance, and truth confront the enemy’s lies and deepen our faith. Ultimately, the sermon calls believers to strengthen their position after victories, trust God in every season, and know that the Lord is God of both the hills and the valleys.

The sermon teaches that true hope is grounded in the gospel, rooted in Christ’s finished work that gives believers peace with God, adoption as His children, and access to grace. It explains that suffering is not meaningless but, in God’s design, produces endurance, character, and a confident hope that will not disappoint because God’s love has been poured into our hearts by the Holy Spirit. It shows that humanity’s problem is exchanging God’s truth for lies, while God remains faithful to His redemptive plan despite human unbelief. The sermon calls believers to reject self-reliance, rehearse God’s Word and faithfulness, and live as a hopeful people who depend on Christ daily and reflect His hope to the world.

How do I know that I am really saved?
As we close, it is crucial that we remember that total humility before God is the only way to eliminate the manifestations of pride. Pastor Bartlett uses Charles Albert Tindley’s hymn ‘Nothing Between’ to further reiterate how we must discard of all self and self desires so there is truly nothing between our Lord and Saviour.

The sermon explains that Christ’s birth marked the fulfillment of God’s plan to redeem sinners, freeing humanity from bondage to the law and granting believers adoption as sons and heirs through faith. It contrasts popular Christmas imagery with the deeper truth that Christ’s mission of redemption necessarily points to Calvary, where His sacrifice accomplished eternal salvation. Paul emphasizes that salvation is not achieved through the Mosaic law but through Christ alone, who offered a once-for-all sacrifice that rescued humanity from sin, hopelessness, and separation from God. Beyond redemption, believers are elevated to the astonishing status of joint heirs with Christ, called to celebrate Christmas not merely as a birth, but as the beginning of God’s immeasurable grace and redemptive love.

Want to know what true humility before God looks like?
Pastor Jonh-Mark Bartlett will take us on an exploratory journey of contrast to yesterday, looking at how the publican felt overwhelmed by God’s presence, fully acknowledging his unworthiness of being there. Today, we will learn that God desires us to acknowledge and confess our flaws and unworthiness before Him, just as the publican did, so that we may become fully transformed in our lives.

Ever wondered the appropriate way to approach God?
Today, Pastor John-Mark Bartlett will be using the contrast in prayer between the Pharisee and the publican to demonstrate the appropriate way to approach God. We will learn how self-righteous individuals exalt themselves above all others and live for public adoration, similar to the Pharisees.
